What does it mean to be created in His image?

  • He gives us some, not all, of His characteristics, traits, and attributes.

  • How are we not similar to God? We are flesh and bones, He is spirit. (John 4:24, Luke 24:39)

  • What do we share God? God is rational, we to can reason, think, and rationalize things. (Isaiah 1:18)

  • We were given the ability to choose. He gave us the ability to love. (John 3:16)

  • What is love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7) : compassion, mercy, grace, fellowship, and friendship. We are given the ability to forgive.

  • He gave us the ability to hate, God is capable of hating. He hates the characteristics of a person, not the person. (Psalms 11:5), but we do not know how to hate like God does.

Today's Scripture

Genesis 1:26-31

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”

27 So God created man
in his own image;
he created him in the image of God;
he created them male and female.

28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.” 29 God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This will be food for you, 30 for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth—everything having the breath of life in it—I have given[d] every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good indeed. Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.

John 4:24

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.”

Luke 24:39

Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”

Isaiah 1:18

“Come, let’s settle this,”
says the Lord.
“Though your sins are scarlet,
they will be as white as snow;
though they are crimson red,
they will be like wool.

John 3:16

For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

 Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not arrogant, 5 is not rude, is not self-seeking, is not irritable, and does not keep a record of wrongs. 6 Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Psalms 11:5

The Lord examines the righteous,
but he hates the wicked
and those who love violence.
